Adoption Process

All Breed Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing dogs in Vermont as well as those from high-kill shelters in the Southern United States. We take great care in matching dogs with appropriate homes, ensuring a loving and fulfilling relationship for both the pet and the adopter. Our adoption process is designed to identify the best homes for our dogs and the right dog for your unique lifestyle. The adoption process begins with the completion of an application on our website. This application gathers information about you, your lifestyle, home environment, and experience with pet ownership. Without submitting this application, we cannot arrange a meeting with any of our dogs. Once your application is submitted, our volunteers will conduct a preliminary review to ensure all necessary information is provided. If anything is missing, you will be contacted for clarification or to complete a new application. Please allow 24 to 48 hours for a response, and ensure that you check your email, including your spam folder, as most communication occurs via email. If you rent your home, we will verify landlord approval to confirm that you are allowed to have a dog and to check for any breed or size restrictions. If your landlord does not permit dogs, your application will be denied at this stage. Next, we will contact your veterinary references to confirm that any current pets are spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations. If you do not have any current pets, we will inquire about the veterinary care provided to your previous pets. If you have never owned a pet, this step will be skipped. We are happy to provide veterinarian recommendations if needed. If your veterinary references cannot verify the required information, processing of your application will be paused until you provide it. Our volunteers will also reach out to your personal references to assess whether they consider you to be a responsible pet owner. This part of the process may take some time, so it is beneficial for you to inform your references to expect our call. If any significant concerns arise during this reference checking, your application may be denied. Once you are approved as an adopter, a volunteer will contact you to schedule a meeting with available dogs. Most of our dogs are housed in a facility in South Burlington, and meetings cannot be arranged until your approval is complete. Please note that approval does not guarantee that you will be able to adopt a specific dog, as adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis. If you wish to reserve a dog after your meeting, a non-refundable deposit of $150 can be placed, which will apply to the total adoption fee when finalized. When you decide on a dog, a volunteer will assist with the necessary paperwork, which includes signing an adoption agreement and a vet services form, as well as transferring ownership and veterinary information. Adoption fees are accepted in cash, money order, or bank check only. Due to the nature of our rescue efforts, we may not have complete history on the dogs, but we will share all information we gather during their time with us. We recommend scheduling a veterinary appointment soon after adoption. While we strive to provide excellent care, we cannot guarantee the health of the dogs. All dogs receive basic vaccinations and monthly deworming, but some health issues may not be apparent before adoption. If your dog is not already spayed or neutered at the time of adoption, you will need to sign a spay/neuter agreement. Our contract requires that all dogs be spayed or neutered within one month or when age-appropriate. You must inform us of when and where this surgery will be performed, and our volunteers will verify completion. Our adoption contract allows for a follow-up visit by one of our volunteers or representatives to ensure compliance with the contract terms. We are committed to the well-being of every dog we place and require that any dog be returned to us if the adoption does not work out or if you need to rehome the dog. Adoption fees are as follows: adult dogs are $495, puppies under six months are $550, and senior dogs over eight years old are $325.
