Adoption Process

Currently, there is no adoption fee for our pets. We offer pets at no cost because we recognize the various expenses associated with welcoming a new pet into your home. These initial costs can include mandatory spaying or neutering, annual vaccinations, general health check-ups, preventive medications, obedience training, food, dishes, collars, leashes, toys, and bedding, among others. Our goal is to ensure that you can provide your new pet with everything they need from the start. The most important priority for us is to find loving homes for these animals as quickly as possible. Please note that your new pet must be spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption, or at the appropriate age, and you will need to provide proof from your veterinarian to the shelter.

Jay County Animal Control in Portland, IN

The Jay County Animal Control is a municipal facility dedicated to safeguarding animals from harmful conditions and ensuring the safety of the community by addressing issues related to stray, unvaccinated, and dangerous animals. Our goal is to foster a harmonious relationship between the animals and residents. In addition to collecting stray animals, we accept every domestic animal that arrives at our facility, regardless of age, health, or condition. While state and county regulations mandate a minimum holding period of five days, we make an effort to care for some animals for several months in hopes of finding them new homes. Unfortunately, the continuous influx of animals limits our capacity to shelter them, and we are sometimes faced with the difficult decision to humanely euthanize those for which we cannot find homes. Our operations are managed by a single Animal Control Officer who serves the entire 384 square miles of Jay County.
