RAIN Humane Society in Callahan, FL
RAIN is dedicated to providing care for animals in need, operating from our headquarters on 13 acres in Callahan, which serves as a safe haven for the animals that come through our organization. This centrally located facility allows us to effectively service Nassau County. Our educational program has successfully reached over 1,100 fifth graders for three consecutive years, receiving approval from the Nassau County School Board and several private schools. The curriculum covers essential topics such as pet care, hurricane preparedness, wildlife education, veterinary visits, adoption processes, rabies protocols, and volunteer opportunities. This year, we were honored to have guest speakers, Nassau County Commissioner Mike Boyle and Dr. Jennifer Farrin from Fernandina Beach Animal Clinic, join us. We plan to expand this program to additional grades as funding permits. Through our RAIN Train Transport/Rescue Program, we transport animals from Nassau County Animal Services and various local strays to humane societies and SPCAs in the Southern United States that are in need of adoptable pets. Many of these rescues benefit from strict spay/neuter regulations and affordable clinics. Since the program's inception in May 2009, we have transported a total of 976 animals. RAIN has partnered with Gleaners Food Distribution from Jacksonville, Florida, to support local residents during challenging economic times. Every Wednesday evening, Gleaners provides a hot meal to the Nassau community at the Fairgrounds, and RAIN participates once a month by distributing pet food to pet owners. This initiative supports over 250 families in our area. Operation RAINDROP aims to reduce the intake of unwanted animals and the rate of euthanasia in our community through sterilization. We collaborate with the First Coast No More Homeless Pets spay/neuter clinic in Jacksonville, promoting their services, arranging appointments, and providing transportation for residents of Nassau County as well as Camden and Glynn Counties in Georgia. Additionally, we offer 24 to 48 hours of recovery at our facility in Callahan at no cost. Since the program launched in August 2009, we have sterilized 347 animals. The Houses 4 Hounds initiative provides dog houses for pets lacking shelter. We work with Nassau County High School woodshop students and Habitat for Humanity to construct dog houses using materials supplied by RAIN. This collaboration ensures that outdoor pets in our county have protection from the elements. RAIN has also partnered with Pedigree, Winn Dixie, and Tampa Bay Humane Society to support military personnel during deployment. Together, we assist service members in finding foster homes for their pets while they are away. The RAIN Foster Coordinator, based in Nassau County, has engaged foster parents and applicants nationwide to facilitate these placements, ensuring that pets are cared for until their owners return home. We take pride in this role and the opportunity to support those who serve our country. Our mission in animal rescue is to improve and save the lives of innocent animals. We live by the belief that while saving one animal may not change the world, it will certainly change the world for that one animal forever.
