Adoption Process

The adoption process involves several steps to ensure a successful match between the animal and the new owner. Interested adopters must complete an adoption application, provide a veterinary reference, and submit personal references. A phone interview will be conducted, followed by a home support visit. Additionally, a meeting will take place at the foster home with the potential adopter and their resident dog(s). The adoption fee is $250, which covers the cost of spaying or neutering, a rabies vaccine, DA2PLPv+L4 vaccine, Lyme vaccine, heartworm and tick disease testing and prevention, fecal testing and deworming, and microchipping. Please note that we do not transport our Australian Cattle Dogs to their new homes.

Service Areas

The organization retrieves animals from all shelters in Ohio and facilitates their adoption within Ohio as well as in other states.

Ohio Cattle Dog Rescue Team in Creston, OH

About OCDRT Persimmon Australian Cattle Dogs often end up in shelters due to a lack of proper research by potential owners regarding the breed. This has created a significant need for a support network for these dogs in Ohio. The Ohio Cattle Dog Rescue Team (OCDRT) was established in mid-2014, but its members bring many years of combined experience in rescue work. The founders have been involved in Australian Cattle Dog rescue since 2003 and have diverse backgrounds in veterinary care, animal control, business ownership, and the military. All have successfully navigated the adoption process with other rescue organizations. OCDRT primarily rescues Australian Cattle Dogs from shelters, and we consider owner surrenders on a case-by-case basis if we have the capacity. If you are considering surrendering your ACD, please reach out to us; we may be able to help you keep your dog in its home. Once we take in an ACD, we complete all necessary veterinary care, conduct evaluations, provide essential training, and when the dog is ready, we facilitate its adoption to approved homes. Dogs in shelters may arrive for a variety of reasons, often unrelated to their behavior. While ACD puppies are undeniably cute, their natural instincts to herd, mouth, bark, or disregard commands can sometimes overwhelm new owners. These behaviors are typical for the breed, yet many are unprepared for the intelligence and assertiveness that can characterize ACDs. Our foster dogs are generally older puppies or young adults. We frequently receive inquiries about whether an adult ACD will bond with its new family, and we confidently respond with "YES!" This breed is known for its loyalty and typically forms a strong attachment to one family member, while still engaging with everyone. Adopting an adult dog eliminates the uncertainties associated with puppies; the adult's size, color, appearance, and temperament are already established. In contrast, a puppy's future behavior is influenced by breeding and how it is raised and socialized. For those interested in adopting a puppy, please note that we do not place our puppies until they are at least 16 weeks old to ensure they are altered, vaccinated, and have received a solid foundation in socialization and training. Australian Cattle Dogs require extensive socialization and training and will challenge their owners regularly. As a 501(c)(3) organization, all donations to OCDRT are tax-deductible. Contributions are used to support the food and veterinary expenses for our dogs.
