Adoption Process

When an animal arrives, it undergoes a health check and a temperament and behavior evaluation. Once the animal is confirmed to be healthy and safe, our in-house veterinarian will spay her, and she will then be available for adoption. Adoption fees begin at $50. All animals receive age-appropriate vaccinations, flea treatment, deworming, and microchipping. The adoption process typically lasts about an hour, allowing time for bonding, an explanation of medical records, and completion of the adoption agreement. This also provides an opportunity for us to address any questions from potential adopters. Adopters must present a valid photo ID, be at least 18 years old, and obtain landlord approval if they live in a rental property. If the animal has already been neutered, it can be taken home the same day. If not, the animal will need to stay until the next business day when the veterinarian is available. All adopted animals must be neutered before leaving with their new families.

Toledo Area Humane Society in Maumee, OH

The Toledo Area Humane Society was established on February 14, 1884, making it one of the earliest humane societies in the United States. Its founding mission was to prevent cruelty and offer shelter for both animals and children. Today, the organization continues to investigate cases of animal cruelty and provide safety and protection for homeless, abused, and abandoned animals. As a private, non-profit entity, the Toledo Area Humane Society does not receive funding from the United Way, government sources, or national humane organizations. Instead, it relies solely on donations from local individuals and corporations, as well as funds raised through community events. To facilitate giving and acknowledge the generosity of supporters, programs such as Forever Friends, which invites individuals to include the Humane Society in their wills, and the Golden Paw League, which recognizes contributions of $100 or more, have been created. Volunteers play a crucial role in the organization, assisting staff with various tasks both inside and outside the facility. Their efforts include providing enrichment activities for animals, such as walking dogs and socializing cats, as well as supporting the Humane Education and Pet Therapy Visitation programs. Foster care volunteers create safe and nurturing environments for animals that are too young for adoption or that require care due to illness or injury. The Humane Society is committed to helping all animals at risk of abandonment or cruelty and strives to find homes for every adoptable animal. It is the only animal welfare organization in the community that offers refuge to any animal at risk of abuse or neglect, regardless of type, health, age, or available space.
