Adoption Process

The adoption process includes submitting an application and participating in an interview. All animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Adoption fees typically range from $35 to $100.

Chama Valley Humane Society in Chama, NM

The Chama Valley Humane Society, established in 1998, is a non-profit organization operating under 501(c)(3) status, composed entirely of volunteers and funded through fundraising efforts, private donations, and grants. Our mission is to implement no-kill strategies aimed at decreasing the number of homeless cats and dogs. We achieve this by sponsoring spay and neuter programs for both companion pets and feral cats, collaborating with regional shelters and foster homes to rehabilitate and rehome animals, and educating our community about responsible pet ownership. We serve a 600 square mile area in northern Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. Although we do not operate a physical shelter, we strive to rescue as many animals as possible from the Village of Chama holding facility, as well as from strays and unwanted animals in our area. All rescued animals are cared for in local foster homes until they can be adopted or transferred to no- or low-kill shelters or rescues. In addition to our rescue and fostering efforts, we offer several programs, including a low-cost spay-neuter initiative for community pet owners, an Angel Fund that assists pet owners with unexpected veterinary expenses through a no-interest revolving loan, and the WAG 'n READ program, which promotes reading skills in local schools by enhancing the bond between children and therapy dogs.
