McHenry County Animal Control & Adoption Center is dedicated to serving the residents and animals of McHenry County. We advocate for responsible pet ownership and animal safety by offering services such as humane education, low-cost microchip and rabies vaccination clinics, and partnerships with community organizations for additional services. Our efforts include reuniting lost pets with their owners and operating an adoption center for pets that cannot be returned to their original homes.

Adoption process

Adoptions are conducted by appointment only. To meet our adoptable pets, please begin by completing an adoption application on our website. Once your application is reviewed, we will contact you to address any further questions and schedule an appointment. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, provide contact information for their landlord if they are renting, and ensure that any existing pets in the home are current on their rabies vaccinations. Adopters can take their new pet home on the same day as their appointment. We request that all household members attend the appointment and that any dogs are brought in for a meet-and-greet to facilitate the best possible placement. The adoption fees are $100 for kittens under 6 months, $80 for cats over 6 months, $150 for puppies under 6 months, and $125 for dogs over 6 months.
