The Calhoun County Humane Society, Inc., operating as The Animal Shelter, is located in Anniston, Alabama, and was founded in 1973 through the efforts of Susan Levens Phillips. Our mission is to provide a safe, decent, and sanitary environment for the pets in our care, to prevent cruelty to animals, and to alleviate the suffering of injured or mutilated animals. We are committed to educating the public about the significant issue of pet overpopulation in the United States, promoting spaying and neutering to reduce the unnecessary euthanasia of animals, and finding responsible homes for as many pets as possible.

Adoption process

The adoption fees are $90 for dogs and $80 for cats, which contribute to covering medical and boarding expenses. The adoption fee for dogs includes a comprehensive examination, vaccinations (DA2PLP+CV, Bordetella, Rabies), spaying or neutering, heartworm testing, deworming, heartworm prevention, flea prevention, and, in some cases, a skin scrape. For cats, the adoption fee covers a full examination (Feline Leukemia/FIV testing, FVRCP), spaying or neutering, rabies vaccination, deworming, and flea prevention. To adopt a pet, you must complete an adoption application. You can obtain a paper application at the shelter or request that one be emailed to you by contacting the shelter via email.
