Adoption Process

The adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $75.00, while the fee for cats and kittens is $65.00. This adoption fee includes essential services such as spaying or neutering, the first vaccination, bordetella vaccination for dogs, microchipping with free registration, and up to 45 days of Shelter Care Insurance, which together provide a value of over $200.00. A rabies tag is also included in the adoption. In February 2007, TLHS implemented a mandatory spay/neuter policy. This means that all adopted animals must be spayed or neutered prior to going home with the adopter. If the animal you wish to adopt has not yet been spayed or neutered, we will arrange transportation to one of our volunteer veterinary offices for the procedure. You will typically be able to pick up the animal at the veterinary office the following day. We generally require that individuals adopting animals be at least 21 years of age. However, individuals aged 18 to 20 may adopt if they live independently. Verification of independent living, such as a utility bill, will be required. If you are traveling a long distance or live out of town or state, please contact us by phone or email to discuss the adoption process. Additionally, we require that adoptive families are not restricted from pet ownership by their rental agreements and that they have suitable living conditions for the type of animal being adopted. For example, lap dogs or declawed cats may need to be kept indoors, while larger, more active dogs may require access to a spacious yard. Furthermore, adopters must sign an adoption statement confirming their commitment to meet the animal's basic physical needs, that the animal is for their personal ownership and not for a third party, and that the animal will not be sold to a research facility for testing purposes.
