The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is a rescue organization located in Des Moines, Iowa, within Polk County, where 12 other animal shelters and rescues also operate. Founded in 1926, ARL is Iowa's largest nonprofit animal shelter and has helped more than 1 million pets in need over its history, caring for many thousands of animals each year. The organization finds homes for dogs, cats, small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs, and barn animals such as horses, goats, and fowl, while also running programs in behavior training, spay/neuter, pet food pantries, and animal cruelty intervention. Situated about 2 miles southwest of Des Moines, ARL is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and weekends from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm.
