Adoption Process

ADOPTION PROCESS To apply for adoption, applicants must meet the following requirements: - Applicants must be at least 18 years old. - A valid driver's license or identification must be provided. - Applicants must reside in the home where the animal will be placed. - The adoption application must be completed by the applicant; no one else may fill it out on their behalf. - If the applicant is renting, landlord information is required, including a statement from the landlord allowing pets. Once an applicant has chosen a pet to adopt, they will need to complete an Adoption Questionnaire. This questionnaire gathers information about their previous experience with pets, the type of pet they are seeking, and their expectations. The purpose of this questionnaire is to assist the Center in matching individuals with a pet that best fits their lifestyle, not to disqualify them from adopting. Before any adoption can be finalized, the following steps must be completed: - The applicant must spend time getting acquainted with the animal they are interested in. - The applicant must be interviewed by a Paws and Claws volunteer. - All family members and/or roommates must meet the animal. - If there are other pets in the home, an introduction is necessary to ensure compatibility, along with documentation that these animals are current on vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. - A home check may be required based on the needs of the specific animal. If a home check is necessary, a suitable time will be arranged for all parties involved. FINALIZING THE ADOPTION To finalize the adoption, the following steps will be taken: - The adoption contract will be reviewed with the adopter, discussing each item and requesting their initials. - The Paws and Claws return policy will be explained. - The animal's medical information will be reviewed. - The animal will be scanned to confirm that the microchip information is accurate. - The Adoption Donation will be collected. - The follow-up procedure of Paws and Claws will be explained. - The adopter will sign and date the adoption agreement, and the coordinating volunteer will also sign. - A copy of the adoption agreement and the animal's medical records will be provided to the adopter. FOLLOW-UP PROCEDURE It is important to follow up after the adoption to ensure any issues are addressed promptly, as adopters may not always contact the Center with concerns. Effective follow-up helps reduce return rates and fosters a successful adoption relationship. Follow-up contacts will occur via telephone or email at the following intervals: - Three days after the adoption, - Three weeks after the adoption, - Three months after the adoption. During these follow-ups, important questions to ask include: - How is the animal adjusting to the new home and routine? - Are there any behavioral issues that we can assist with? - Has the animal's name been changed? - How are the other pets in the home adapting to the new family member? All information gathered from the adopter will be documented in the animal's file. RETURN POLICY Despite our best efforts to match the right pet with the right family, there may be instances where animals are returned to the Center. Please note that adoption donations are non-refundable. The suggested adoption donations are $80 for dogs, $50 for cats, $100 for puppies, and $75 for kittens.
