SPCA of Northern Virginia in Arlington, VA

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Northern Virginia is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization founded by local citizens committed to rescuing domestic animals from cruelty, neglect, and abandonment. Our funding is derived entirely from membership dues, donations, and fundraising events. We continuously seek to expand our animal rescue efforts and enhance our community services. All activities of the SPCA are managed by a voluntary Board of Directors, committee members, and volunteers. We do not operate a shelter; instead, we rely on foster homes to care for domestic animals until they are adopted. One of our main responsibilities is to investigate reports of cruelty, abuse, neglect, and abandonment. In many cases, it is not necessary to remove an animal from its home. We believe that education is crucial for successful pet ownership and for preventing future inhumane treatment of animals. Our adoption volunteers work to find homes for animals through individual appointments and open house events. These animals are brought into our custody by state-licensed humane investigators and dedicated volunteers. Humane education plays a vital role in promoting animal welfare. We provide speakers for schools, as well as for adult and children's groups, and offer information to individuals seeking guidance. Our public relations volunteers help us establish important connections with the media, allowing us to reach a wider audience. We also publish a newsletter and offer free educational articles and problem-solving assistance to the community. Our fundraising volunteers actively research and coordinate new funding opportunities, as we do not receive any financial assistance from state or county sources. Foster homes create a nurturing environment where animals can receive the love and attention they need. The volunteers in these homes provide comforting contact for animals that may have experienced cruelty or neglect, assess each animal's needs, and share valuable information with potential adopters. The SPCA adheres to a policy of not euthanizing animals and accepts them into foster care as space becomes available.
