Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation in Chantilly, VA

Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation is based in Chantilly, Virginia, in Fairfax County, roughly 15 miles east of Alexandria, VA, where it operates alongside 24 other animal shelters and rescues in the county. Since 2001, LDCRF has rescued and rehomed more than 50,000 homeless dogs and cats, most of whom faced euthanasia at overcrowded municipal shelters, and it now facilitates around 2,500 adoptions each year with the help of volunteers who logged over 48,500 hours in 2025. The rescue relies heavily on foster homes to give dogs and cats a safe, temporary place to decompress and prepare for adoption, and it partners with the Lost Dog Café and Stray Cat Bar & Grill, both founded by LDCRF's founder Pam McAlwee to support its lifesaving mission. Beyond adoption, LDCRF offers volunteer opportunities working directly with dogs and cats as well as support and remote roles for its broader rescue and community outreach efforts.

Adoption process

Applicants complete a general adoption application online, then attend a weekend adoption event (mostly at local PetSmart stores) to meet dogs, sign up for a priority interview slot, and meet with an Adoption Counselor; if approved, they pay the adoption fee and take the pet home the same day, with a two-week trial period offered afterward.
