Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC), based in Herndon, Virginia, in Fairfax County, is a humane society located about 15 miles east of Alexandria, VA, alongside 24 other animal shelters and rescues in the county. HFAC administers the Certified Humane Raised and Handled® program, a nonprofit certification effort founded in 2003 to improve the lives of farm animals in food production from birth through slaughter. Its science-based standards, developed with a volunteer Scientific Committee of animal welfare scientists and veterinarians, require farmers and ranchers to provide animals with a supportive environment where they can safely engage in natural behaviors and be handled with compassion and respect. The organization unites farmers and ranchers, scientists, and shoppers and supporters in a shared mission, with a vision that all farm animals worldwide can live in a comfortable, healthy environment suited to their natural instincts.
