Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County in Lovingston, VA

The Almost Home Pet Adoption Center is a no-kill facility that is owned and operated by the Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County. It is conveniently located at the intersection of Route 29 North and Stagebridge Road (Route 624), just two miles north of Lovingston. The facility is open to the public daily from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. The Adoption Center accommodates both dogs and cats. Dogs are housed in individual rooms, typically one or two per room, featuring wall murals created by local artists and calming hemi-sync music played through a sound system donated by the Monroe Institute. Visitors are encouraged to spend time in these rooms to become familiar with the animals prior to adoption. Cats and kittens are kept in colorful cat condos that include handcrafted furniture for climbing and perching. Adoption fees at the center cover the costs of vaccinations, deworming, heartworm testing, or feline leukemia/AIDS testing, as well as spaying and neutering. All adult animals receive these veterinary services before being adopted. Kittens and puppies are adopted with neutering certificates that provide for these services at the appropriate age. Many of the animals available for adoption come from unclaimed or surrendered pets at the Nelson County Animal Control Facility. Each animal is assessed for adoptability based on temperament and appearance. The center also accepts animals surrendered by residents of Nelson County, depending on available space and their adoptability. I am a volunteer at the center, and among my responsibilities, I take photographs of the animals and share them online to increase their visibility to potential adopters.
