Adoption Process

To adopt an animal, you must meet several requirements. First, you need to ensure that you can meet the animal's physical and behavioral needs. You must be at least 18 years old and provide a valid photo ID along with your current address. If you own your home, you will need to prove ownership. If you are renting, please provide a copy of your lease that outlines any pet restrictions, as well as a receipt for any required pet deposit. Additionally, you must be a resident of Fairfax County to adopt any animal under the age of six months that cannot be altered before leaving the shelter. You are also required to comply with all animal-related laws in your state and county. There is a $20 adoption fee for dogs, cats, and rabbits. By state law, all dogs and cats adopted from the animal shelter will be spayed or neutered before leaving, unless a medical condition prevents the procedure at that time. The sterilization must be completed by the date specified in the adoption contract. Spay/neuter deposits are as follows: $55 for female cats, $30 for male cats, and $65 for both male and female dogs. This fee is due at the time of adoption. The adopter is responsible for any additional costs, such as hospitalization, boarding, or other prerequisites for surgery as required by the veterinarian.
