Adoption Process
Our adoption process begins with a four-page application form. We aim to match each adopter with the most suitable animal. Once an application is approved, we arrange a meet-and-greet that includes all household members and any existing pets. We also verify veterinary records and consult with landlords. In some cases, particularly challenging adoptions may require a home visit and behavioral counseling. Adopters are required to sign a contract outlining their responsibilities, including the commitment to return the pet if they can no longer care for it. The adoption fees are as follows: for dogs, $140 for those under one year, $100 for those aged one to five years, and $75 for dogs over five years. For cats, the fees are $95 for those under one year, $75 for those aged one to six years, and $50 for cats over six years.
Service Areas
Our service areas include San Leon, Houston, Galveston, Texas City, Bacliff, as well as Harris County, Galveston County, and Brazoria County. We also serve numerous smaller towns in the region.
Bay Area Pet Adoptions/SPCA in San Leon, TX
Bay Area Pet Adoptions is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter, pet rescue, and adoption organization that depends on public donations to provide housing, food, and medical care for the dogs and cats in our adoption program. Established in 1967 as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Galveston County, we operate under the names Bay Area Pet Adoptions and Bay Area SPCA. Our non-profit tax ID is 23-7011759. We are not affiliated with or funded by any national animal organization, which means we rely entirely on community contributions to sustain our shelter. Donations made to national animal welfare groups do not support our organization or the animals in our care. All financial contributions and in-kind donations are tax-deductible. The mission of Bay Area Pet Adoptions is to provide shelter for companion animals rescued from kill shelters, animal control facilities, and individuals until they find permanent homes. Our adoption program aims to match animals with families that align with their lifestyle and activity levels. In addition to animal sheltering, Bay Area Pet Adoptions is committed to education and community outreach. We work to reduce the number of unwanted companion animals and the incidence of euthanasia by informing the public about responsible pet care, including the importance of spaying/neutering, proper vaccinations, and the prevention of heartworms and other parasites. We also provide information about resources for low-cost spay/neuter assistance and other medical care, as well as a low-cost vaccination clinic available by appointment. At our shelter, all animals receive a health check from a licensed veterinarian and are monitored regularly throughout their stay. They are spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, given rabies shots, and microchipped. All animals are placed on monthly heartworm and flea prevention and are dewormed. Our cats are tested for FIV and FeLV, while our dogs are tested and/or treated for heartworm disease to ensure they are heartworm negative before adoption. Socialization is essential for successful adoptions and helps animals adjust to life outside the shelter. Our dogs and cats are not confined to kennels; instead, they are socialized daily in play yards or playrooms by staff and volunteers. Regular human interaction and socialization with other animals are crucial for these pets to successfully transition into their new homes.
