House of Mews in Memphis, TN
House of Mews is an animal shelter located in Memphis, Tennessee, in Shelby County, about 4 miles northwest of the city and one of 18 shelters and rescues serving the area alongside 17 others in the county. Founded in February 1994 by Elain Harvey after cats began appearing at Goodwin's Nursery in Germantown, it operates as Memphis' and the nation's first and oldest no-kill, legal cathouse, rescuing cats from local kill shelters and letting them roam freely in its store. The nonprofit, a DBA for Puddytat Protectors Inc., has found homes for more than 10,000 cats between 1994 and 2020 with the help of over 20 volunteers and more than $150,000 in annual donations that fund daily care and medical services like spay/neuter and leukemia testing. Today the shelter houses more than 100 cats, with 50 or more roaming free, at its 900-square-foot storefront on S. Cooper Street.
