Southwest Pennsylvania Retriever Rescue Organization or S.P.A.R.R.O. in Plum, PA
Southwest Pennsylvania Retriever Rescue Organization, or S.P.A.R.R.O., is a rescue organization based in Plum, Pennsylvania, in Allegheny County, about 15 miles west of Pittsburgh, where 14 other animal shelters and rescues are also located. Founded in September 2000, SPARRO began as a place for abused, abandoned, and wayward retrievers to be rehabilitated and find forever homes, and it became a federally recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2003. In 2009 it launched Shades of Grey Sanctuary for senior dogs, providing lifelong care, hospice, and a permanent home for elderly and special-needs dogs who are not put up for adoption. SPARRO operates as a no-kill organization, has rescued well over 2,500 dogs from across the eastern United States and Canada, and funds its work primarily through adoption fees along with donations for its senior and special-needs residents.
