Adoption Process
ADOPTION RELEASE AGREEMENT By accepting this animal for adoption, I agree to the following conditions: I. I will take full responsibility for meeting all of the animal's needs, including providing appropriate food, exercise, grooming, and companionship. I will renew any required licenses annually and ensure that my new pet resides in my home. Under no circumstances will this pet be housed outdoors, in a garage, shed, or any other building apart from my residence. I will not give away or relinquish ownership of this pet without prior notification to Parma Animal Shelter, Inc. I will not allow my pet to roam freely and will comply with all City and State animal laws regarding pet ownership. II. My new pet has received vaccinations. I will consult with my veterinarian for regular check-ups and necessary vaccinations to protect against disease. The Parma Animal Shelter, Inc. will not be responsible for any veterinary fees. III. There is no guarantee that a seemingly healthy pet is not incubating an illness that may become apparent after adoption. The Parma Animal Shelter recommends that I take my new pet to a veterinarian. If a serious health issue is discovered within 10 days of adoption, I may arrange to return the animal with the veterinarian's documentation of the illness. Returns cannot be made due to behavioral or minor health issues. The Parma Animal Shelter, Inc. reserves the right to refuse the return of any animal. IV. To assist the Parma Animal Shelter in finding permanent homes for its animals and to prevent "trial" adoptions, the adoption fee is non-refundable. No monetary refunds will be issued under any circumstances. The Parma Animal Shelter, Inc. makes no guarantees regarding the temperament of the adopted pet and will not be liable for any damages resulting from aggressive behavior. V. Any animal adopted into a home with multiple pets should be isolated from the other pets for at least 7 to 10 days. This period allows for the observation and treatment of any communicable illnesses before they can spread to other animals. VI. Anyone found in violation of this adoption agreement who does not correct the violation within 48 hours will forfeit the adopted animal to the Parma Animal Shelter, Inc. and may be subject to fines. The adoption fee is $85 for dogs and cats, with a reduced fee of $50 for dogs and cats over 7 years old. Puppies under 6 months are $100. DOGS Dogs receive a one-year rabies vaccination, distemper/parvo shot, Bordetella vaccine, heartworm test, and the first heartworm pill. They are also checked for worms. The shelter will take them to a veterinarian of its choice for spaying or neutering. CATS AND KITTENS Kittens receive combination testing and FVRCP vaccinations until they are 3 months old, with three shots administered three weeks apart. Additionally, they receive a one-year rabies vaccine (with certificate), blacklighting/lyme dip for ringworm prevention, two treatments of Advantage Multi, and four dewormings with Pyrantel. Spaying or neutering is performed through a local veterinarian when the kitten reaches three pounds. No kitten may leave the shelter without being spayed or neutered. Cats receive the same vaccinations as kittens but only two FVRCP vaccines, and no cat may leave the shelter without spaying or neutering. We do not adopt animals as gifts or surprises. The entire household where the animal will reside must be interviewed, and an adoption application submitted for consideration by the Warden and the adoption committee. If multiple applications are submitted for a single animal, the decision will be based on what is believed to be the best home available, rather than on a first-come, first-served basis. Animals must be held for 5 days to allow owners a chance to reclaim them. During this period, we can accept adoption applications in case the owners do not come forward. We cannot "hold" animals while a decision is being made about submitting an application. If the animal is a dog and there is already a second dog in the household, the adoption counselor will require that both dogs be brought to the shelter for an interaction to assess compatibility. Pamphlets are available at the shelter, and additional information can be found on our website to assist with the care of the adopted animal. Volunteers are also available to answer questions before and after adoption. Our mission is to find loving permanent homes for animals that have become homeless through no fault of their own. The experience of being in a shelter can be traumatic and distressing for animals, and we strive to make them comfortable during their stay. Please ensure you thoroughly research your decision to adopt before applying, as we aim to prevent further trauma to our animals by avoiding returns after adoption.
