Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA) is a rescue organization based in Sanford, North Carolina, located in Lee County, where one other animal shelter or rescue also operates; it sits roughly 35 miles southeast of Fayetteville, NC. CARA is dedicated to rescuing, caring for, and placing companion dogs and cats into safe, responsible homes across North Carolina, with a mission to promote responsible pet ownership through humane education and to provide shelter and compassionate care to animals until they're adopted or reunited with their families. Every dog and cat in its care is fully vetted, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped before adoption. CARA is an independent, volunteer-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded through donations, bequests, and special events, with 100% of tax-deductible donations going directly to the animals.

Adoption process

Interested adopters complete an online application, which is reviewed within about 2–3 days; if approved, CARA contacts the applicant to schedule a meet-and-greet with the pet before finalizing the adoption. There is no application fee, and adopted animals must be returned to CARA if circumstances change.
