Adoption Process
Interested families must visit the shelter in person to meet the dog or dogs they are considering for adoption, unless they encounter a dog at an adoption event. We have a comprehensive application that must be filled out and submitted at the shelter; we do not offer online applications. Our process includes verifying references from veterinarians, personal contacts, and landlords, with a requirement for a signed letter from the landlord and a follow-up phone call to confirm that pets are permitted. Once an application is approved, we arrange a meet and greet if there are other pets in the household. If there are no other animals, the adoption can proceed immediately. We encourage all potential adopters to spend ample time with the dog(s) prior to adoption, and a contract must be signed before the dog(s) can go to their new home.
Service Areas
We accept stray animals from Gloversville, NY, and we have very limited capacity for surrenders due to size restrictions and contractual obligations. We are committed to finding loving homes for our dogs and will adopt to any responsible family, regardless of their location.
Regional SPCA in Gloversville, NY
We are a volunteer-operated, no-kill animal shelter located in a leased facility that spans 574 square feet and includes eight kennels. Each year, we care for approximately 150 dogs, with about two-thirds of them being placed for adoption after their owners do not reclaim them. Many of the dogs that arrive at our shelter are in poor condition; some have never received veterinary care, while others have been subjected to fighting and breeding, resulting in malnourishment and infestations. Our dedicated volunteers take pride in rehabilitating these dogs so they can find the loving homes they deserve. Before adoption, all dogs are spayed or neutered (unless medically unable), microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, DHLPP, Lyme disease (after testing), and bordatella, and placed on heartworm preventative (following testing). Our team consists of 40 volunteers who work tirelessly, operating 365 days a year, including holidays and severe weather conditions, without paid staff to fill in when needed. We maintain three shifts each day, two of which are open to the public, and one dedicated to evening care, including potty breaks for the dogs. Volunteers often come in at all hours to attend to the animals, whether for a late-night visit with our long-term resident, Pilot, or to comfort the dogs during storms. Additionally, one of our volunteers has initiated an educational outreach program to teach elementary school students about proper pet care and manages an internship program for younger volunteers. We are also exploring reliable transportation options to facilitate community access to a nearby low-cost spay/neuter clinic, particularly for larger dogs, as we work to implement effective solutions. Ultimately, we aspire to establish our own facility that provides safe, spacious accommodations for dogs, cats, and other companion animals.
