Applicants fill out an online or in-person application, then attend a "meet & greet" in the Greater San Diego, CA area; if all parties agree, the adoption proceeds, followed by a post-adoption check-in, with adoption donations of $250 for dogs and $35–$95 for cats.

Friends of Humane Society de Tijuana, based in San Ysidro, California, is a humane society founded in August 2007 to support organizations and individuals working to improve conditions for animals in the U.S. and Mexican communities bordering the Tijuana area. Located in San Diego County, roughly 15 miles northwest of San Diego, it shares the region with 40 other animal shelters and rescues. The organization funds free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, mange and parasite treatment for street animals, urgent veterinary care for rescued animals, pet food distribution, and adoption programs, supporting four grassroots groups plus individual rescuers who lack local funding. It also promotes public education on humane animal treatment and works to prevent the international smuggling of animals.
