Its mission is finding permanent, loving homes for Miniature Schnauzers and Schnauzer mixes throughout the northeastern United States, providing veterinary care, foster placement, and adopter education along the way. As a federally registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, NJSRN will never euthanize a dog in its program for lack of an available home, instead keeping dogs in foster care—sometimes for life—until the right match is found. The organization also promotes responsible dog ownership and refers potential owners only to Miniature Schnauzer breeders who follow responsible breeding practices, including health screening for PRA.

Adoption process

Prospective adopters must submit an adoption application requiring a veterinary reference plus two personal references (or three personal references if no vet reference), after which the application is reviewed, shared with members, and the applicant is placed on a waiting list to be matched with an available dog; an adoption donation is required at the time of adoption.
