The Southwest Missouri Humane Society, known on its own site as the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri, operates the largest no-kill shelter in Southwest Missouri, located at 3161 W. Norton Road in Springfield, Missouri, roughly 4 miles southeast of the city center in Greene County, where 8 other animal shelters and rescues also operate. It is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit licensed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture, funded solely through private donations rather than any government agency or national humane organization. The shelter rescues dogs and cats and works to place them in loving adoptive homes, while also housing the Cooper Clinic, Springfield's first low-cost veterinary wellness clinic, which has served over 5,000 animals in the community. Beyond adoptions, it offers services such as microchipping, monthly dog training classes, and spay/neuter appointments to support pets and their owners throughout the region.

Adoption process

Applicants must be at least 18 with a valid photo ID, submit and be approved for a completed application (online or in-person during adoption hours), and any pets already in the home must be up-to-date on rabies vaccines (verified by a vet call) before the animal can go home with them.
