Adoption Process

To adopt an animal, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid identification. You can submit an adoption application either online or in person, or you may send it via fax to 410-833-9251. Once your application is received, you will be notified by telephone. General adoption applications can be approved and remain valid for 90 days, allowing you time to decide which animal you would like to adopt. If you are interested in a specific animal, it is mandatory to meet the animal in person before proceeding with your application. The application process typically takes between 24 and 48 hours. You will need to meet with an adoption counselor at the main desk of our Adoption Center. All members of your household must also attend this meeting to interact with the animal. You are required to provide two references who are not relatives, as well as veterinary contact information for any pets you have owned in the past five years. If you are renting or leasing your home, you must also provide your landlord's contact information. If your application is approved, you will need to bring any current dogs in your home for a scheduled introduction to ensure compatibility with the new pet. A pick-up time for your adopted animal will be arranged. Additionally, if you are adopting a rabbit, a home visit by the House Rabbit Society will be required. The adoption fees are as follows: - Dogs (over 6 months old): $100 - Small dogs (under 25 lbs.) and puppies (6 months and under): $150 - Cats (over 6 months old): $50 - Kittens (6 months and under): $85 - Rabbits: $50 - Guinea pigs: $10 - Rodents (mice, gerbils, and hamsters): $5

Baltimore Humane Society in Reisterstown, MD

The Baltimore Humane Society, established in 1927 by Mrs. Elsie Seeger Barton, is an independent, non-profit, no-kill animal shelter. It provides a low-cost Spay, Neuter, and Vaccine Clinic for the public, as well as a pet cemetery that includes grief support services. The organization does not receive any operational funding from local or federal governments, nor from national animal welfare organizations. The Baltimore Humane Society is committed to ending the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. It promotes affordable spaying and neutering to help control the population of unwanted animals and addresses the underlying issues that lead to pet abandonment. The Spay, Neuter, and Vaccine Clinic is accessible to all members of the community. In addition to its shelter services, the organization advocates for the humane treatment of animals and raises awareness about animal welfare issues through public education. It offers presentations to groups of various sizes and ages, both on-site and off-site. Furthermore, the Baltimore Humane Society operates a beautifully maintained cemetery for companion animals, providing a peaceful resting place for beloved pets. The cemetery offers a range of tributes and services, including a free pet grief support group for those in need.
