The SPCA of Hancock County is a humane society located in Mount Desert, Maine, about 40 miles northwest of Bangor, and is one of four animal shelters and rescues serving Hancock County. Founded in 1911, it has found homes for tens of thousands of dogs and cats over the decades while providing shelter and care for abandoned, stray, and surrendered animals. Beyond adoptions, the organization emphasizes community outreach and education on proper and humane animal care, and it operates almost entirely on community funding, being 99.95% community-funded.
