PAWS of NE Louisiana (Pet Assistance Welfare Society) in Monroe, LA
PAWS of NE Louisiana (Pet Assistance Welfare Society) is an animal shelter based in Monroe, Louisiana, in Ouachita Parish, roughly 90 miles west of Shreveport, and one of six such shelters and rescues serving the parish. Founded in 2003 by local residents concerned about animal welfare, PAWS is an all-volunteer, donation-funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to reducing the population of unwanted and lost companion animals and fostering positive interaction between pets and people. Its work centers on spay/neuter assistance, shelter animal rescue, pet tagging, and pet therapy and humane education programs, and it has saved hundreds of animals through rescue efforts and offsite adoption events while facilitating thousands of spay/neuter surgeries. The organization also hosts the annual Krewe of PAWS Mardi Gras Pet Parade in Downtown West Monroe, the only pet-friendly Mardi Gras parade of its kind in northeast Louisiana.
