Barktown Rescue is a no-kill rescue and adoption organization based in Bardstown, Kentucky, located in Nelson County, about 35 miles northwest of Louisville, KY, with two other animal shelters or rescues also serving Nelson County. Founded in August 2009 by two volunteers who began by working with Nelson County Animal Control to place dogs with rescues around the country, Barktown Rescue was created after realizing hundreds of adoptable dogs were still being euthanized locally each year. The organization has since grown into a network of more than 80 fosters and volunteers, reaching a milestone of 3,500 pets adopted in May 2019. Barktown Rescue receives no city, state, or federal funding and relies entirely on earning or raising its own annual operating budget.

Prospective adopters fill out an online application, are contacted by an adoption coordinator to review the application, and then schedule a meet and greet (with a possible home visit) before finalizing adoption; requirements may include vet references, landlord approval for renters, and fencing depending on the dog.
