The Southeast Kansas Humane Society is a humane society located in Pittsburg, Kansas, in Crawford County, roughly 80 miles east of Springfield, Missouri, where five other animal shelters and rescues also operate. Founded in 1973, it is a nonprofit organization with 501(c) tax status, governed by a nine-member board whose terms rotate every three years. Its mission is to protect homeless and abused animals, run a modern adoption program, investigate cases of animal abuse, and promote spay/neutering to control pet overpopulation. The shelter takes in about 1,500 animals a year and is typically at capacity with around 90 dogs and 30 cats awaiting homes; adoption fees are $50 for dogs and puppies and $35 for cats and kittens, with all animals vaccinated, wormed, and spayed or neutered before adoption.
