The Humane Society of the High Plains serves Hays, Kansas, in Ellis County, where it is one of two animal shelters or rescues in the county, and sits roughly 130 miles north of Kearney, Nebraska. Founded in 1975 by a group of community members dedicated to animal welfare, the organization opened its first shelter in 1978 and later expanded, eventually taking its current name after growing to provide services throughout northwest Kansas. Since 1993, it has operated out of the Virginia Miller Animal Shelter, built in memory of Virginia Miller by her husband Paul. Its mission is to foster the humane treatment of animals through education, human-animal relations, shelter, cruelty reporting, and animal control.
