The Whitley County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, operated by the Humane Society of Whitley County, serves Columbia City, Indiana, about 20 miles east of Fort Wayne. What began as a dream in 1998 for longtime resident Emily Deutsch and local veterinarian Dr. Don Richey led to the opening of the shelter and adoption center in August 2004. The shelter cares for cats, dogs, and small animals, matching adoptable pets with new families through an application, meet-and-greet, and take-home process, and relies heavily on community donations and volunteers to cover daily needs like food, litter, and supplies.
