Adoption Process

To begin the adoption process, an individual must first visit the shelter to meet the pet they are interested in. After the visit, an application is submitted, which will be reviewed by a volunteer. The application then requires approval from two additional Board members. Adopters are required to agree to spay or neuter any pet that is not yet old enough to be fixed at the time of adoption. They must also commit to returning the pet to the shelter at any time if they are unable to care for it for any reason. The standard adoption fee for kittens or adult cats under five years old is $80. If two pets are adopted together, the total fee is $120. Senior citizens aged 55 and older can adopt a pet for a reduced fee of $50. The fee for adult cats aged five years or older is $50, while special-needs cats, including those that are FIV- or FeLeuk-positive, have a reduced fee of $25.

Hancock County Humane Society in Greenfield, IN

The Hancock County Humane Society is a no-kill, non-profit animal shelter recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization. We operate independently and do not receive financial support from the Humane Society of the United States. Since our establishment in 1977, we have been entirely staffed by volunteers and funded solely through donations from the local community. Our primary mission is to find permanent, safe, and loving homes for the animals in our care. We typically house 30 to 40 cats, both in our shelter and with foster volunteers. Each year, we take in and adopt out approximately 150 pets. With the recent addition of a medical isolation suite, our volunteers, in collaboration with local veterinarians, can provide the necessary daily care to help sick animals recover and become adoptable. We also partner with other local shelters and, last year, rescued over 75 cats from facilities that face euthanasia due to illness or limited space. In addition to our shelter services, we aim to provide resources for essential animal care in the community, helping residents keep their pets and avoid surrendering them. Our pet food pantry is approaching its first anniversary, and we host annual low-cost vaccination clinics in partnership with local veterinarians to offer affordable vaccinations to pet owners. We assist in reuniting lost pets with their owners and ensure that our adopted pets are microchipped, allowing for easy transfer to their new families. We also support scouting groups with pet-related education and service projects and connect pet owners with spay/neuter resources to help reduce the population of unwanted animals. Our motto is "Kindness to Animals, Inevitably Leads to Kindness to People."
