Fried's Cat Shelter in Michigan City, IN
Fried's Cat Shelter is a no-kill, cageless cat rescue located in Michigan City, Indiana, in LaPorte County, about 30 miles east of South Bend. Founded in 1977 by Hans and Lucille Fried, refugees who came to the U.S. from Nazi Germany in 1939, the shelter was created after the couple converted an old roadside motel into a sanctuary for homeless and abandoned felines, guided by their belief that spaying and neutering, not euthanasia, was the humane solution to cat overpopulation. Today the shelter operates two buildings housing over five hundred cats, including a separate facility for felines with special medical needs such as FIV, feline leukemia, and FIP, and every cat taken in is guaranteed a home for life. The shelter is open Friday through Sunday from 12:00PM to 4:00PM, and it is one of six animal shelters and rescues serving LaPorte County, Indiana.
