American Greyhound is an animal shelter located in Hobart, Indiana, in Lake County, about 30 miles northwest of Chicago, IL, and shares the county with 15 other animal shelters and rescues. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping retired racing greyhounds, Spanish galgos, lurchers, and other sighthounds in need, run entirely by volunteers and foster homes rather than a physical facility. The organization provides veterinary care and other essentials to dogs coming out of racing or difficult circumstances abroad, then works to place each one in a loving, permanent home. Its adoption process includes an application, an adoption guide, and ongoing support for adopters and fosters alike.

Applicants submit an adoption application online, are contacted by a volunteer adoption coordinator to discuss preferences, are matched with a compatible foster dog based on household factors, and then coordinate pickup/drop-off and payment of the adoption fee.
