Metro East Humane Society is a humane society located in Edwardsville, Illinois, in Madison County, about 20 miles southwest of St. Louis, MO, and shares Madison County with 17 other animal shelters and rescues. Founded in 1986, MEHS operates as a no-kill shelter serving cats and dogs across Madison, St. Clair, Jersey, Bond, and Macoupin counties, with a second location in Highland, Illinois. Beyond adoptions, the organization provides humane medical treatment, vaccinations, and spay/neuter services, runs a Trap-Neuter-Return program and low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics, and operates the MEHS Riverbend Pet Food Pantry. In 2024 alone, MEHS reported saving 1.9K lives and distributing 20,000 pounds of free pet food to the community.
