Founded in February 2014, the organization is a registered 501(c)3 charity that operates entirely through a network of private foster homes rather than a physical shelter facility, taking in dogs primarily from municipal Connecticut pounds and, when space allows, from owner surrenders. Furry Friends is an all-breed rescue that does not discriminate by breed, welcoming everything from Chihuahuas to pit bulls as long as resources and an appropriate foster home are available; it does not take in cats, other small animals, or wildlife. As it has no walk-in facility, the shelter is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week for online applications, with adoptions completed through an application and approval process followed by an in-home meet and greet.
