Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary in Lanai City, HI

The Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary is a cat rescue located in Lanai City, Hawaii, about 70 miles northwest of Kailua, HI, and it's open daily from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Founded in 2006 when Kathy Carroll moved to the island from Illinois and was moved to act after seeing its large homeless cat population, the sanctuary began with 25 cats and a horse corral and has since grown into a 4-acre home for more than 700 rescued cats, each with a name, microchip, and medical record. The sanctuary has saved over 3,000 cats from hunger and homelessness, offers free admission to visitors, and also serves as a safe haven that helps protect native and endangered ground-nesting sea birds. It operates entirely on donor support, relying on gifts to help provide the roughly 100 pounds of cat food needed every day.

Adoption process

Prospective adopters must spend time bonding with a cat, must keep the cat strictly indoors, and should contact the sanctuary directly by email if interested; there is no adoption fee, but adopters cover travel-related costs (health check, carrier, ferry, rental car, possible overnight stay) to get the cat off the island, and donations are welcomed to support this process.
