Hawai‘i Island Humane Society in Holualoa, HI

Hawai‘i Island Humane Society is a nonprofit animal welfare organization located in Holualoa, Hawaii, about 60 miles east of Hilo. Established in 1965, its mission is to prevent cruelty to animals, eliminate pet overpopulation, and enhance the bond between humans and animals through lifesaving programs and community outreach. The shelter finds homes for dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs, and also offers spay/neuter services, community veterinary care, microchipping, and foster and volunteer programs. It is open Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Adoption process

Browse available pets online or at the shelters, then submit a Pre-Adoption Questionnaire (application) for the pet(s) you're interested in; once approved, staff will contact you to schedule a Meet and Greet appointment at the shelter, and most pets can go home the same day (adopters must be 18+ and present valid ID).
