Atlanta Humane Society in Atlanta, GA

The Atlanta Humane Society (AHS) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization, recognized as one of the oldest private charitable entities in Atlanta. Founded in 1873 following a visit from Robert E. Lee, AHS was initially established to protect women, children, and animals. For 79 years, it operated primarily as a child protection and animal welfare society. Today, AHS is a prominent pet adoption center, veterinary clinic, and educational program provider, having transitioned from its original location on Marietta Street to its current site at 981 Howell Mill Road in the 1930s. Additionally, the Alpharetta campus at 1565 Mansell Road opened in 2011. AHS serves approximately 25,000 animals each year and successfully places around 8,000 dogs and cats into permanent homes. The organization is dedicated to ensuring that all adoptable pets find homes. AHS does not euthanize adoptable animals and imposes no time limits on their stay in the facility. Euthanasia is performed only on animals suffering from severe medical issues or those with behavioral concerns. AHS takes pride in its role in addressing pet homelessness and overpopulation in the southeastern United States.
