The Humane Society of Northern Virginia is a nonprofit animal rescue located in Dumfries, Virginia, about 25 miles northeast of Alexandria, and operates as an all-volunteer organization powered by Advocates for Abused and Abandoned Pets (A3P). Its mission is to promote the human-animal bond and a no-kill philosophy through compassion, empathy, and education, placing pets into the right home for life while offering sanctuary to older, injured, or hard-to-place animals at risk of euthanasia. Guided by its motto "Pets 4 Life," the organization follows the Five Freedoms of animal care and states it will never euthanize a pet due to space constraints or owner request. The shelter is open to the public Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00 PM, or by appointment.
