About this shelter
In Defense of Animals' Hope Animal Sanctuary in Grenada, MS
In Defense of Animals' Hope Animal Sanctuary sits in rural Grenada, Mississippi, about 90 miles north of Olive Branch, MS, in a region with few animal shelters or animal control services. Established by In Defense of Animals in 1993, it has rescued thousands of dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, horses, cows, and chickens, and today assists with the rescue and placement of more than 500 animal companions each year. Its facility, rebuilt in 2018, includes a main building with veterinary rooms and an education center surrounded by 20 temperature-controlled tiny houses with grassy yards—19 for dogs living in small groups and one secure enclosure for cats. Animals receive veterinary care and spay/neuter services before adoption, many being transported to rescue partners in northern states like Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, while those too traumatized to be adopted are given a permanent home for life at the sanctuary.
