Kentucky River Animal Shelter is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Hazard, Kentucky, about 70 miles northwest of Richmond, KY, and is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Operating as the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter Society, it cares for stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals across Breathitt, Knott, Letcher, and Perry counties, taking in an average of over three hundred animals per month. It is a volunteer-based organization that relies heavily on community and business donations rather than full county funding, and it also runs a spay and neuter program. Over the last six years it has saved more than 90 percent of the animals in its care, aided by partnerships with over 30 rescues across the United States and volunteers who support kennel maintenance, foster and hospice care, and transport.
