It operates as a "no-kill" facility licensed under the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act (PACFA), functioning as an impound facility supporting the Animal Control Division of the Walsenburg Police Department. It provides temporary housing for dogs brought in by law enforcement as strays, vicious dogs, or under special circumstances, holding them for five days before they become city property and may be transferred or made available for adoption; it is licensed only for dogs and does not generally accept owner surrenders due to limited kennel space. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
