National Greyhound Foundation, Inc. is a Homosassa, Florida-based animal shelter located in Citrus County, roughly 60 miles south of Tampa, where five other animal shelters and rescues also operate. The organization specializes in rescuing retired racing greyhounds, with particular focus on "hard to adopt" dogs with special needs, including injured, elderly, brood, seizure-prone, scarred, or behaviorally challenged animals that many other groups turn away. Volunteers work directly with kennels and farms to pull dogs—sometimes as many as 50 at a time—always asking how many hard-to-place dogs are available so they can be included in rescue efforts. The foundation is a member of United Way, the Combined Federal Campaign, Independent Charities of America, and Animal Charities of America, and it operates programs such as the Guardian Angel sponsorship program, a retirement program, and a special needs greyhound initiative to help place every dog in a "forever home."
