Adoption Process
The adoption process begins once the animal has been spayed or neutered, received age-appropriate vaccinations, been microchipped, heartworm tested, dewormed, and flea treated. Additionally, the animal will have undergone individual rehabilitation and obedience training. To start the adoption process, applicants must complete an Adoption Application available on our website. It is essential to read the "Fine Print" page prior to submission. The application includes comprehensive questions designed to help us match our rescues with the most suitable homes. All questions must be answered, as incomplete applications will not be considered. After submitting the application, a representative will reach out to discuss it, answer any questions, and potentially arrange a Meet and Greet. Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment, and we ask that applications be submitted only when everyone in the household is ready to welcome a new pet. All family members must be dedicated to the care, training, and attention required by the new pet, including the financial responsibilities associated with veterinary care. Meet and Greets are conducted by appointment and must include all household members and current pets. This meeting provides an opportunity to spend time with the rescue and start to understand their personality. If the Meet and Greet is successful, a Home Inspection will be scheduled. The Home Inspection, arranged by a representative, involves a visit to your home to ensure it is safe for the new pet. The inspector will check for hazards, assess fencing, zip lines, and tie-outs. If modifications are needed, guidance will be provided. Once the home passes inspection, a Trial Run will be scheduled. A Trial Run allows the rescue to adjust to your home environment. A representative will bring the animal to your home, and if everything is in order, the animal will stay with you on a trial basis. The initial 2-3 days should be dedicated entirely to the animal to help them settle in and adapt to your routine. During the Trial Run, we provide the animal’s food, a favorite toy, and a familiar item to ease the transition. Typically, a Trial Run lasts 2-3 weeks. If the Trial Run indicates that the rescue is well-suited for your family, a follow-up visit will be conducted to finalize the adoption. At this time, you will sign an Adoption Agreement and pay the adoption fee. It is required that you purchase a safe leash, an approved collar (either martingale or buckle style), and a personal identification tag prior to this visit. Adopting a rescue not only saves that pet's life but also enables us to save another by creating space in our program. Requirements and Important Information We devote significant effort to understanding the needs and behaviors of our rescues. They undergo temperament testing in various situations and may have known backgrounds, as they live in our homes or kennels. We train them to overcome any issues encountered prior to rescue, striving to find each animal a suitable forever home. We only place our rescues in homes that meet their specific needs. We also serve as a lifelong resource for families who adopt from us. However, we cannot guarantee temperament and behavior once the animal is placed in a new environment, as changes in surroundings and handlers may lead to unpredictable behaviors. It is vital to read the specific requirements and information for each animal before submitting an application. Each write-up is tailored to the individual needs of the pet, and applying for a pet you do not meet the requirements for is not productive. We do not enforce the same criteria for every dog; some may not require a fence, while others may need a companion animal to thrive in their new home. For instance, if a listing states "Must have fenced yard," that means we will not adopt to homes without a fence. All dogs and cats in the household must be spayed or neutered, including outdoor cats, and all animals must be current on vaccinations. We will conduct vet reference checks for verification, with exceptions made only for medical reasons. Puppies adopted before spay/neuter age must be altered by seven months. Cats must not be declawed, and we do not allow tail docking or ear cropping. We will not adopt to homes with outdoor dogs unless they are properly cared for barn cats. Additionally, we do not adopt any animal to be kept outside or left outside for the majority of the day. Puppy adoptions will not be approved for homes that leave puppies alone for longer than six hours without a plan for socialization, mental enrichment, potty breaks, and exercise. Following our adoption process is crucial for maintaining safety for our rescues and ensuring a consistent transition. We do not skip any steps. The Trial Run must take place without other plans, as the first 2-3 days should focus on the new pet's adjustment. It is essential to provide them with a period of decompression and patience as they adapt to their new surroundings. Failing to meet their needs early in the adoption process may lead us to believe that the pet is not a priority, which could result in us removing the rescue from your home. The adjustment period varies for each animal, with the first three days being particularly challenging. On average, it can take two to three weeks for a new pet to feel comfortable in their home. We are a positive reinforcement-based training rescue, and we do not endorse punishment or painful training techniques. Use of shock collars, prong collars, or any force-based methods is strictly prohibited. Underground or wireless fencing is allowed only if the animal has received proper training. All family members and current pets must be present for Meet and Greets with a rescue dog, and the adopter must be present as well. Our rescues cannot be given as surprise pets to adults. We reserve the right to deny any applicant. Submitting an application does not guarantee approval. The Application We appreciate our adopters, as their support enables us to save lives. Adopting one pet allows us to save another, as each adopted pet opens up a space for another animal in need. Our application is detailed to help us create the best match possible between pets and families. All questions must be answered for the application to be submitted, and you may use "N/A" for questions that do not apply to you. Our adoption fees vary depending on the animal: the average fee for dogs is $200-250, puppies are $300, cats are $50, and kittens are $75.
