Adoption Process
The adoption process begins with the completion of a cat adoption application, which will be thoroughly reviewed. Each applicant will undergo a screening based on the information provided, including veterinary checks to ensure that any current or previous pets are up to date on vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. Personal references will be contacted, and property checks will be conducted in consideration of the animal's needs. Declawing is strictly prohibited; any indication of intent to declaw a cat will result in an automatic denial of the application. Additionally, if an applicant has previously given away an animal, this will also lead to an automatic denial. Once the application has been evaluated and a decision is made, approved adopters will sign a spay/neuter agreement. This agreement stipulates that the cat must be spayed or neutered within six months of age to qualify for a $50 refund on the adoption fee. This refund policy applies only to kittens; cats six months of age and older will already be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, with the cost included in the adoption fee. The adoption fee for kittens is $200, with a $50 refund available upon completion of the spay/neuter requirement. Adult cats also have an adoption fee of $200, which includes the spay/neuter procedure. All kittens and cats will be up to date on vaccinations, deworming, flea/tick prevention, and will have undergone a wellness checkup before being placed in their new homes. Documentation of these services will be provided to the adopter for their veterinarian. A separate log will be maintained to track spay/neuter refunds by certificate number. If a cat is not spayed or neutered within six months, a follow-up will be conducted with the adopter to inquire about the status of the procedure, as the refund will expire after this period. During the adoption process, a contract will be signed by the adopter, agreeing to have the animal spayed or neutered, and acknowledging that if they can no longer care for the animal, it must be returned to Calla's Critter Rescue.

Calla's Critter Rescue in Elverson, PA
My name is Calla Gibson. I graduated in 2020 from Delaware Valley University with a Bachelor of Science in Small Animal Science and a minor in Large Animal Science. I plan to attend veterinary school in the near future to earn my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. For the past eight years, I have worked at Diane's Discount Pet Supplies and Adoption Center, where I began rescuing cats and kittens. As the organization grew, I decided to establish my own non-profit rescue, inspired by the support I receive daily. What started as a few bottle-raised kittens has expanded to caring for 30 to 40 kittens each season. In addition, I have worked as a veterinary technician at The Affordable Spay Neuter Clinic and Pet Care for six years, where my passion for spaying and neutering developed. Dr. Silberman, a dedicated veterinarian, is committed to reducing the number of unwanted animals in the United States. This summer, he surpassed 20,000 surgeries, and I am proud to be part of this effort. For my senior seminar presentation, I focused on the impact of the feral cat population on our ecosystem. Feral cats rank among the top 100 invasive species and significantly threaten native wildlife, disturbing ecological balance. I firmly believe that if more people contributed to addressing the issue of feral and stray cats, which can produce three to four litters per season, we could alleviate this problem. Spaying and neutering are crucial to controlling the cat population, and it is essential for everyone to understand the seriousness of this issue. I rescue kittens and cats to prevent them from reproducing once they reach six months of age. By rescuing 30 or more kittens in a season, I can help prevent a significant number of future litters. When individuals bring cats to me, I emphasize the importance of capturing the mother cat, as she may already be pregnant or likely to become pregnant again after losing her kittens. My primary concern is that trapping and spaying the mother cat alone will not resolve the issue of overpopulation, as it is vital to save the kittens as well.
