Adoption Process

KC Pet Project cares for over 10,500 pets annually and relies on adoptions to further its lifesaving mission. All three KC Pet Project locations are open seven days a week for adoptions. When a pet arrives at the shelter as a stray, we hold it for a five-day period to allow the owner an opportunity to reclaim it. After this period, the pet becomes available for adoption or may qualify for foster care or transfer to rescue organizations. We are committed to reuniting lost pets with their owners and maintain a strong nationwide rescue network to facilitate the transfer of pets from our program to others. Our open adoption policy allows for same-day adoptions, with dog adoption fees ranging from $50 to $300 and cat adoption fees from $25 to $50. We regularly offer adoption specials to encourage pet adoptions.

KC Pet Project is a nonprofit organization under section 501(c)(3) that operates the Animal Shelter in Kansas City, Missouri. Each year, we care for over 10,000 animals and collaborate with Animal Control and other animal welfare organizations to enhance the adoption rates of homeless pets. We focus on lifesaving initiatives that promote pet retention, identification, the reunification of lost pets, and education on responsible pet ownership within the community. Our goal is to establish a No Kill Kansas City, reflecting our strong commitment to lifesaving efforts. Our mission is to eliminate the euthanasia of healthy and treatable pets in Kansas City, Missouri, by implementing progressive and effective lifesaving programs and advocating for sound animal control policies.
