Adoption Process

The adoption fee for a dog under one year old is $300, while the fee for a dog aged one year or older is $250. Some dogs may be available for a reduced fee. Adopters must be at least 21 years old. All pets currently residing in the adoptive home must be spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. Veterinarians across the United States now recommend heartworm prevention in most areas, with year-round use being advised. If your veterinarian recommends heartworm testing and consistent use of preventative medication, we will verify that your veterinary records indicate heartworm testing has been completed and that preventative measures have been purchased. For applicants with dogs currently in their home, we expect a history of providing this care for at least the past year. If there are no dogs currently in the home, we will check previous veterinary references to confirm heartworm testing and preventative use for any dogs that have been in the home. Purchasing heartworm preventative requires a prescription, and any prior purchases will be verified during the veterinary reference check. If the applicant's veterinary clinic recommends heartworm preventative but it is purchased from another source, proof of prior purchases must be provided. Once we receive a completed adoption application, we will conduct a phone interview and a home visit before approving the applicant. A veterinary reference is required for all current and recently owned pets. Both personal and veterinary references will be verified. If you are renting, please provide your landlord's contact information or a verification letter from your landlord confirming acceptance of pets.

Southwest English Setter Rescue in Boerne, TX

Established in 2012, Southwest English Setter Rescue (SWESR) is a non-profit charitable organization registered as a 501(c)(3) in Texas. Our founding members bring extensive experience from various animal rescue groups, particularly in English Setter rescue, allowing us to share a deep appreciation and understanding of this remarkable breed. Most of the dogs in our program are rescued from abandonment or surrendered to shelters throughout the Southwestern United States. We also support individuals who wish to place their English Setters for adoption. We welcome prospective adopters from across the United States and Canada. All SWESR dogs are placed in foster homes, where we assess their energy levels, temperaments, training, and other skills before adoption. Each dog undergoes a comprehensive veterinary examination, is spayed or neutered, brought up to date on vaccinations, tested and treated for heartworms and parasites, provided with heartworm prevention, and microchipped prior to adoption. Our primary objective is to ensure the best possible match for each dog, and we work closely with potential adopters to facilitate successful placements. SWESR relies entirely on adoption fees and private donations to cover our expenses, with all contributions directly supporting the care of our rescue dogs. We actively seek volunteers to aid our efforts, especially foster homes, in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and California. We encourage individuals to consider donating or volunteering with SWESR. We adopt dogs to homes throughout the United States and Canada. Due to our requirement for pre-adoption screening, which includes a home visit, adopters outside the Southwestern United States may experience delays while we coordinate this step with a volunteer. If an adopter cannot travel to the foster location to pick up their new dog, we can arrange transport within the Southwestern United States at no cost through our network of volunteer drivers. We have a strong volunteer network in many areas of Texas and Oklahoma, with limited transport routes established in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and California. Patience may be necessary while we secure volunteer drivers for transporting adopted dogs. Adopters also have the option to transport their new dog via commercial airlines as air cargo or through paid ground transport services at their own expense. We are happy to assist in making those arrangements.
