ADOPTION PROCESS: Step 1: Understand Our Adoption Policies To adopt a pet from Paws for Life, you must be at least 18 years old and able to provide a lifelong, loving home. Pets must be kept indoors, with exceptions for working barn cats and unsocialized community cats. Cats cannot be declawed, and dogs cannot be debarked. We expect that pets are treated as cherished family members. Adjustment Period: All animals require time to acclimate to their new surroundings. We require a minimum two-week adjustment period before finalizing the adoption and transferring ownership. Step 2: Apply to Adopt and Let's Chat Fill out a short application online or at one of our adoption events. If you do not have a specific animal in mind, describe what you are looking for, and our volunteer adoption coordinators will suggest pets that may be a good match for your household. Step 3: Get Matched Once we receive your application, a volunteer adoptions counselor will contact you to discuss your household and expectations for a new pet. They may recommend other pets that may suit your needs better. Step 4: Meet-n-Greet After deciding which pets to meet, we will arrange a meet-and-greet at your home, the foster's home, or an upcoming adoption event. We encourage all household members to be present, as it is important for everyone to agree that the selected pet is the right fit. Step 5: Welcome Home Your New Family Member The day your new pet comes home marks the beginning of the mandatory two-week adjustment period. This time can be stressful for both pets and humans as everyone is getting to know each other. Your new pet will need to adjust to their new environment, routine, and family. On average, it takes about 14 days for a cat or dog to settle in and show their true personality. Some pets may adjust more quickly than others, so please be patient and give them the time they need.

Paws for Life Rescue in Troy, MI

Founded in 2007, Paws for Life Rescue (PFL) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare, operated by a committed group of volunteers. PFL is a five-star certified all-breed dog and cat rescue based in southeast Michigan and holds a platinum status rating from GuideStar, recognizing it as a top-rated nonprofit. The organization rescues homeless, neglected, abused, and abandoned dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens from overcrowded shelters in southeast Michigan. PFL firmly believes that time or financial constraints should never justify ending an animal's life. Instead, it utilizes a network of loving foster homes where animals are cared for until they are placed in permanent homes. PFL's mission is to find the best possible match for each homeless pet in its care. PFL adheres to principles such as Do No Harm, the Five Freedoms, force-free and fear-free practices, and rejects breed discrimination, treating every animal as an individual. The organization is committed to eliminating barriers to finding homes for all pets. In addition to rescue efforts, PFL focuses on humane legislation and educational initiatives aimed at improving the lives, safety, and future of companion animals in Michigan and neighboring areas. PFL operates without paid staff and does not receive government funding. All donations go directly to the animals in care, covering veterinary expenses and essential supplies. Moreover, PFL actively participates in various local and national humane campaigns, including Save Them All, End Dogfighting, Community Cat TNR, and Eliminating Puppy Mills, and is involved with community and national Disaster Animal Response Teams. Paws for Life is also a proud member of the Michigan Pet Alliance, the state's sole association for animal welfare organizations and advocates for pets and pet owners.
